Cyclone Ditwah: Schools and Colleges Shut Across Chennai Region Amid Intense Rain Alert

In view of the heavy rainfall and flooding triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, district authorities on Monday evening declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in several parts of Tamil Nadu. The closure affects Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram (Kanchipuram), and Chengalpattu, among other neighbouring districts.

The decision was taken as a precautionary move after weather warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), forecasting persistent heavy rain, possible waterlogging and flooding across low-lying areas.

Sudden Downpour, Waterlogging and Disruptions in Chennai

Parts of Chennai recorded extremely heavy rainfall in a short span, with localities such as Nungambakkam, Ennore, Meenambakkam and areas around Poonamallee registering significant precipitation. This caused widespread waterlogging, inundated roads, and disrupted normal traffic flow across various parts of the city.

According to authorities, the waterlogging not only made commuting for students unsafe but also impacted public transport — with some local buses stranded and cars reportedly sinking in inundated streets.

Higher Education Also Affected: Exams Deferred

The holiday was not limited to just schools. Colleges and major institutions in the region — including Anna University and University of Madras — also saw their semester exams postponed. The administration cited the heavy rainfall, uncertain weather conditions, and the safety of students as reasons behind the decision.

For many students — especially those preparing for crucial exams — the sudden postponement has led to uncertainty. While the closure is a necessary precaution, stakeholders including parents and students have expressed concern over the revised academic schedules.

How Authorities Are Responding — And What Residents Should Do

The state government, in coordination with disaster-management agencies, has urged residents to avoid non-essential travel until the weather stabilizes. Officials have also advised people to stay updated via local advisories, especially regarding sudden flooding, waterlogging, or transport disruptions.

Additionally, municipal and civic bodies have mobilized pumps and drainage systems to clear waterlogged roads; cleanup operations are reportedly underway in low-lying zones.

What Lies Ahead: Rain Predicted to Continue

Although the storm system has weakened, the IMD warns that substantial rain — sometimes heavy to very heavy — may continue, especially in the coastal and adjacent districts. The proximity of the depressed weather system to the northern Tamil Nadu coast suggests more rainbands could make landfall in coming hours.

Authorities have emphasized that the closure of educational institutions will remain until conditions improve — prioritizing safety over routine operations. Residents and students are advised to stay alert for further updates.
