As President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India draws international attention, New Delhi once again finds itself navigating a familiar but increasingly complex diplomatic path: balancing its long-standing partnership with Russia while deepening strategic ties with the United States. The visit underscores India’s commitment to strategic autonomy at a time when global politics is marked by sharpening rivalries, shifting alliances, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

For decades, Russia has been one of India’s most reliable partners. The relationship, rooted in Cold War–era cooperation, has been particularly strong in defense, energy, and diplomatic support.
