Indian Army Inducts Apache Helicopters to Boost Combat Power

Indian Army Inducts First Batch of Apache Helicopters in Major Defence Boost
In a significant stride toward modernizing its combat capabilities, the Indian Army formally inducted its first batch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters on Monday. The arrival marks a critical milestone in India's efforts to bolster aerial firepower and tactical operations, particularly along its western borders.
Three Helicopters Delivered, More to Follow
Manufactured by U.S. aerospace giant Boeing, the AH-64E helicopters were delivered under a ₹4,168 crore deal signed in 2020. This initial batch consists of three aircraft, with the remaining three expected to arrive later this year. Once fully deployed, the fleet will be stationed at the Jodhpur Air Base in Rajasthan, close to the India-Pakistan border.
Strategic Capabilities Enhanced
Designed for offensive operations in both day and night conditions, the Apache is considered one of the most advanced attack helicopters globally. It features state-of-the-art avionics, including a Longbow radar, Hellfire missiles, Hydra rockets, and a 30 mm chain gun. The helicopters are also equipped with crash-resistant airframes and systems that enhance survivability in hostile conditions.
“The Apache will be a force multiplier in our combat arsenal,” said Lt Gen Manoj Pandey, Chief of Army Staff. “"This move is part of a larger push to modernize the Indian military and adapt to the changing security landscape in the region."
Army-Specific Variant
While the Indian Air Force already operates 22 Apache helicopters, this marks the first dedicated fleet for the Indian Army. The Army version includes enhancements for close air support and integration with ground-based command systems, tailored to the Army’s tactical doctrine.
Strengthening Defence Readiness
The induction comes amid ongoing efforts to modernize India’s armed forces and respond to evolving regional threats. With heightened tensions along the western frontier and concerns over asymmetric warfare, the Apache’s addition is viewed as a timely enhancement to India’s strike capabilities.
What Comes Next?
Officials confirmed that the remaining three helicopters will be delivered by October 2025. Pilot training, technical handovers, and system integration are already underway.
Boeing, in a statement, expressed its commitment to supporting India's defence needs and maintaining long-term collaboration with Indian industries under the “Make in India” initiative.
