Though, India has traditionally been known as coffee producing country, coffee bean imports still play a small but significant role in the industry. A point to consider: If India is already a Coffee-producing country then why is it lacking in producing some premium qualities or special beans? Nowadays, consumption of single-origin coffee, cold brew, gourmet coffee brands, etc. is high in demand, this demand has become the main reason for Coffee Import. 

Some companies import high quality arabica beans from abroad while few others mix beans from different sources to prepare blend. Other companies export instant prepared coffee, which is considered as value addition.

Countries import coffee beans to India:   

• Vietnam: Robusta
• Indonesia: Special Robusta
• Ethiopia: Arabica (flavourful)
• Columbia: Arabica (High-quality)
• Brazil: Arabica and Robusta

Buyers of Imported Beans: 

• Coffee Roasters & premium cafe chains like Starbucks, Blue Tokai, Third Wave.
• Instant Coffee manufacturers like Nestle, Tata Coffee.
• Traders and importers serving the HoReCa segment like Hotels, Restaurant, cafes. 

Import Volume: India Imports between 8,000 and 12,000 metric tons coffee annually. This import volume is very low in percentage due to our own coffee production is more than 3lac tons per year. Though import is increasing day by day just because premium cafe culture is in demand and E-commerce Coffee brands are rapidly growing.

Law for Coffee import: 

• IEC (Import Export Code) FSSAI License.     
• Import according to DGFT Rules.
• Quality approval from Coffee Board of India (in some special cases).

• Unroasted beans can be subjected to up to 100% custom duty.
