Uttar Pradesh Takes Big Step to Beat Mosquito-Borne Filariasis
The Uttar Pradesh Health Department has launched a major awareness and medication campaign across 27 districts to fight lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-borne disease that can cause severe disability if left untreated.

To reach every eligible person, health workers are organizing village meetings, street plays, and Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Yatras. These efforts aim to educate people and ensure they take the prescribed anti-filarial medicine.

“Public participation is key. We want everyone to understand the importance of taking the medication,” said Dr. A.K. Chaudhary, the State Filaria Officer.

In addition to drug distribution, the campaign focuses on mosquito control, sanitation, and community outreach, using local volunteers and media in regional languages.

The drive is part of India’s national goal to eliminate filariasis by 2030, and UP hopes to set an example with this grassroots effort.
With the campaign expected to run intensively for the next few weeks, the UP government is urging all citizens to come forward, take their medication, and spread the word about filariasis prevention.

As India edges closer to its elimination goals, such integrated and community-driven campaigns could be the tipping point in breaking the transmission cycle of one of the country’s most neglected tropical diseases
