India Export to Iran

India suspends tea export to Iran
India has put a full stop over tea export to Iran during geopolitical issues. The date was 25th.June.2025, when this action was taken to escape trade difficulties mainly in west Asia. This move resulted as many tea containers from Kolkata are now abandoned at Mumbai Port(Nhava Sheva, JNPT).
Kolkata, Siliguri, Assam are mainly impacted due this suspension, because these cities are mainly known as Primary exports zone for tea. Other than this Logistic companies, small scale producers & Iranian buyers will also be disturbed. Indian exporters which are planning for Q2 shipments will be badly impacted because Annually, India exports 20-25 millionkg tea to Iran. This demand from Iran gets increased especially due to their festive & religious months .
This move shows that how international conflicts can disorganize wares or commodity trades. Especially this time, The Iran-israel clashes have extended reliability concerns across west Asian trade routes. Now Indian authorities can postpone large volume exports until hazard are evaluated.
Possible consequences :
- Late payments
- Port congestion
- Increase in shipping insurance risks
Steps exports should take :
- Can divert to substitute markets.
- Coordinate with Iranian regarding insurance terms
- To keep an eye on DGFT advisories
This unexpected step has cleared one thing “Geopolitical risk is now a trade risk”.
